Untamed Wilds Session 16!

Our session started with secrets. The Raven ranger and I explored his fate and if the party ever finds him, we can sort things out then. We had a reasonable number of players tonight, we had Stone the war forged war wizard, Kadence the centaur barbarian, Jewel the cat folk warlock, Mai the satyr glamor bard, Kiva the harpy swashbuckler rogue, and Red the blood hunter cat folk. The party was hired by Keyhaw, a traveling satyr folk hero, to go deal with this upstart satyr king figure people had been talking about. It seems he had raised an army of displeased fey and monsters and was planning to attack Godmoot, the city under the party’s protection, and where they live. Keyhaw gave them a route up the mountain where the party could negate most of the army and either ask the satyr king to leave Godmoot alone, or exterminate him. They set off up the mountain, watching for ambushes along the way. They saw strange glowing fey flitting about on the periphery, strange out of season gourds and fruit on parts of the path, and strange drawings etched into the rocks that seemed to watch them as they traveled up the mountain.

Their first contact with the enemy was Red spotting three large dogs covered in flames. They were a decent distance from the group and only he could see them. So he shot them. Three oversized hell hounds noticed the party and attacked. The group made quick work of them and none were able to sound an alarm, only suffering from a few flame blasts along the way. They gathered their team and headed further up the mountain.

Jewel sent her familiar ahead and it noticed two floating skulls, dripping with putrid chunks of flesh and leaving a trail where they flew. The creatures had four eyes, each switching to a different color in sync with the other. Tiny, the familiar, heard the skulls talking about guard duty and laughing in Abyssal and reported back to the party. The monsters suffered a surprise attack, loosing a few rounds to careful planning of the party and Mai using hypnotic pattern to remove the skulls from the battle. The party ganged up on one skull and were planning to take them out one at a time. They attacked the closer one first, taking turns dealing massive damage but another skull rose from the ground and headbutted one of the stunned ones. The group was suddenly dealing with three angry skull monsters with eye beams. The first victim was Jewel, she was hit with a enervating ray taking over a quarter of her health in damage. The next was Kadence, she was paralyzed by one eye beam and hit with a disintegration beam by the other. The tables had turned. The group worked together, Kiva attacking from a hidden position and fleeing after striking, Red launching powerful elemental arrows into the enemies, Stone dropping a fireball on top of the skulls and hasting the centaur, Kadence using three attacks a turn to slice up each and every one of the skull bastards, Mai changed the battlefield to give more advantageous positions to the party, and Jewel pushed the skulls further and further away from the party, keeping them at bay. Eventually the skulls died and the party rested for a bit, Mai granting everyone temporary hit points before they took their breather.

The group made their way to the top of the mountain and saw a large satyr shaped figure with an iron helm sitting on a metal throne with a huge muscular serpent man bodyguard. Mai attempted to bard the Satyr King and found him unyielding in his position, Mai was offered blood looking wine, in keeping with tradition. Mai threw the first glass’s contents over his shoulder, hitting a frail satyr with runes across his body in the face with the blood, and noticed another frail satyr behind the throne. The Satyr King did not take kindly to this and nodded to his bodyguard. Combat was joined and the party got to see what the body guard could do, they focused all their firepower on him, Stone dropping a fireball on the duo and the minions, causing no damage to the Satyr King, frying one of his henchmen, and scorching the serpent. Kiva ran in and stabbed the serpent, which followed her and slammed in with three scimitar attacks, causing he to lose most of her hit points. Mai was attacked by the Satyr King, who lashed out with a tail attack and two stabs with an iron pitchfork summoned from the ether. The remaining henchmen ran up and poked Mai for one damage. The focus of the party became dropping everything into the snake, and it eventually fell to the onslaught of Kadence, hasted again and swinging with three attacks a round. The Satyr King looked at the party, said well done, and teleported away leaving the party nursing plenty of wounds and more questions. Keyhaw showed up to give the group some money for their troubles and the night ended.

If you are feeling generous please check out my Ko-Fi page https://ko-fi.com/bookgnomerob to help me keep making these games awesome. In the future I hope to be able to do write ups like this for every game I run. Every little bit helps.

Untamed Wilds Session 15!

Recently strange figures have been seen digging plots across the countryside. Tonight was no different. The party traveled to a strange graveyard they had seen many weeks back and found a fire giant and his allies digging in the graveyard. The party consisted of the goliath wizard, half-orc barbarian, harpy swashbuckler, cat folk ranger, lizard folk druid, satyr bard, cat folk rogue/barbarian, centaur barbarian, raven folk ranger, cat folk blood hunter, and cat folk warlock. The stealth team of raven folk ranger, harpy swashbuckler, cat folk blood hunter, and cat folk barbarian broke off the main force and snuck their way into a position to see the giants better, noticing the fire giant leader, his two fire ogre minions, and a strange huge cloaked figure. The rest of the party grouped together in the shadow of the ruins and waited for a signal. Before they attacked they heard a voice telling the giants they were close to finding him, which did not make sense.

The raven opened fire and hit the cloaked figure a few times, and combat began. Over the combat the cloaked fomorian giant became prone thanks to the bard’s quick use of command and the fire giant was sent elsewhere by the wizard. As the party tore into the remaining ogres and the prone giant they heard the voice call out again and the ground shook, releasing foul clouds of harmful vapors into the air. The party avoided most of the damage but the casters focusing on their spells lost them. The giant ran over to the wizard that had banished him and with two swift strikes knocked him unconscious. The tide started to turn towards the monsters again, but the gravity of the situation was complicated by the bard making the fire giant fall over laughing and a wave of water from the druid knocking foes prone. The barbarians grouped up on foes, trying to slay them as quickly as possible. The party was also surprised to find that fire ogres explode when killed, they had been seeing flames in their blood and were able to put two and two together right before the first one popped. The harpy dive bombed the fire giant when it got back up and afterwards fled into the sky, only to get attacked by an undead fire dragon. They killed the fire dragon and were able to bring down the fire giant while it ran towards the hole they had been digging.

As it died its sword fell into the hole and a crack was heard. Foul tendrils of dark magic pulled out of the hole and latched on to the dead giant. The party laid into him more damage hoping to stop whatever was happening as well as chugging magic healing potions, knowing whatever happened next might be rough. The centaur stole his sword, dragging it across the battle field. The giant stood up, flesh falling from its face and arms. It blasted the raven with lightning which arced into the cat folk barbarian/rogue as well. The giant reached for the sarcophagus and started lifting it out from the hole in the ground but was knocked back down with magic, falling prone and dropping the raven into the pit. The group piled up more hits on him and the warlock lobbed a fireball onto the giant, which was immune to fire damage, and burned the cat barbarian/rogue as well as the raven. When the giant was able to act he grabbed the sarcophagus again and teleported away, the raven had been holding on as well, and now is where ever the giant ended up. The rest of the party looked for loot, and found nothing but broken stone, the giants huge sized great sword, and questions.

Untamed Homebrew

Untamed Wilds History:
Many years ago, the giants saved bits of life from a great cataclysm. The giants made three islands within a relatively safe area of the world and helped nurture the creatures they saved. The first island had humans, elves, dwarves, gnomes, halflings, and half orcs living in relative peace until one of the giants betrayed his siblings by destroying one of their cities with an army of monsters he had snuck into the sanctuary. The giants bound their wayward brother to the bottom of the ocean and scattered his forces and life has seemingly returned to normal.

The second island became home to the wilder peoples. Fey, satyrs, cat folk, lizardmen, minotaur, centaur, and goliaths lived in harmony under the protection of a nature goddess, Ellendriana. Ellendriana’s continent was contested at first by a tribe of evil giants that staked claim to its riches. Their champion was composed of the rock itself and was of great size. The giant came at Ellendriana when she had just finished creating her place of power, a stone platform between three mountains. The giant, whose name was lost, was turned into the western mountains and his torso is still visible. The island inhabitants pay homage to Ellendriana and what once was a festival style worshiping grounds has turned into a city called Godmoot.

The third island is populated by Hobgoblins and Orcs. The hobgoblins have a harsh and cruel god that leads them to slaughter most in their path and make more hobgoblins. The orcs on the other hand worship a giant blue panther beast that was cast out of hell for killing other devils. They had a society based on solar alignment and giant stone ziggurats that reached towards the heavens. The ziggurats were made of polished obsidian. After many years of “peace” between the two tribes the hobgoblins wiped out over half the population of the orcs and made the rest into slaves. The dead orcs rose again as undead and are seeking ways to over throw the hobgoblins and reclaim their home.

The three islands for the most part have ignored each other, not wanting to draw attention to their own politics and problems with outsiders. The hobgoblins from the third island have started invading the second islands and have set up a small base camp on the southern shore. Some first islanders have made their way into the second island but tend to return home with tales of wonder or horror depending on their experiences.

Our story will start on the second island. The great tribes have gathered under the giant stone structure that Ellendriana calls home. The giantess has summoned the tribal elders and leaders, outsiders have been invading their coasts and must be secured. There are hobgoblins in the south, a fierce foe that has attempted to conquer the lands over the years, and to the north strange sails have been seen on the ocean. Ellendriana fears these might be signs of a more dangerous threat, fearing if the fire giants to the west gain allies they might try to overthrow her rule and the peace.

Barbarians, bards, druids, fighters, rangers, rogue, sorcerer, and warlock would be the most common classes with Satyr, Minotaur, Centaur, Catfolk, Lizard folk, Harpy, Raven folk, and Goliath being the best races for the campaign. For character statistics use the standard array (15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8) from the players handbook. For satyrs we used the eladrin elf stats and for harpy we use the bird people the aarakocra. As the game has progressed I have been less strict about what classes and races are used. Magic is fickle so anyone can show up on these islands.

Races

Catfolk: the catfolk make up the ruling nobility on the island. Their ancestral heroes helped forge this land in the fire of battle, defeating an undead scourge and his army. Ever since the other peoples defer to the wisdom of the cat folk. Thunder’s Point is a magical research tower where aspiring mages from all peoples can go to learn spells and history.

Centaur: centaur patrol the wilds of the island, protecting the simple folk and relaying messages between the cities. Family groups migrate all the way from Northpoint to Sothen to the Scale Ways and up to Stone Den and Ethens, being struck by wanderlust. Many become merchants and traders and few become sailors.

Goliath: almost large sized stone men, goliaths are the builders on the island. Almost every impressive structure was built or planned by a goliath craftsman. Goliaths protect the border from their fortresses with the help from warriors and mages from all the peoples of the island. The goliaths also built the Northpoint Watchtower, where the goliath mage Feklin keeps an eye on the sea. The goliaths attribute their building skills to the living giant goddess Ellendriana.

Harpy: from their sanctuary of Cloudkeep the harpy have domain over the sky. They watch over the southern horizon looking for any sign of the hobgoblin airships that have attempted to make landfall in the past. Many of the harpy are entitled and stuck up, they lord their flight over the raven folk. The raven folk long for flight and believe if they serve the harpy the secrets of the sky will be shared with them.

Lizard folk: most live in the Scale Way, a swamp on the eastern side of the island. Their strange customs confuse travelers within the swamps and most of the wildlife proves deadly to the unprepared. The lizard folk once warred with the rest of the island but now work along side the other races to keep the lands safe from worse threats.

Minotaur: strong and hardworking, many minotaur find they are suited for mining, fishing, crafting, as well as battle. Many minotaur rent out their services as mercenaries. The minotaur live within Stone Den, a mountain city that descends into the caves and Northpoint, a fishing village of seafaring minotaur.

Raven folk: the raven folk live in the forests below Cloudkeep, they seek the secrets of flight and act as servants to the Harpy. Many raven folk make their way to Godmoot or Thunder’s Point seeking a better life.

Satyr: The satyrs are closely tied with the fey on the island and often work as intermediaries between the common folk and the ancient fey. Satyrs are also the second most common creature to encounter on the island, they outnumber the other races through sheer stubbornness on their part. Their ties with the rest of the fey helps supplement their forces with intense magics. Feyglen is where most of the satyrs congregate, many have taken to cultivating the lands of the Godmoot.

Known enemies:

Giants: various giants live on the western part of the continent. The fire giants are the most dangerous of the giants, there are plenty of ettins and ogres that work for the fire giants as well.

Gnolls: terrible hyena men raid and pillage many of the small villages. Most work for the giants and many have come to work for some strange satyr known as Blackfur.

Hobgoblins: militaristic goblinoids that attack settlements for sacrifice to their cruel god. They come from the southern island and have been a problem for far too long.

Undead: the ancient foe of the cat folk used undead minions. As of late many creatures have been rising from the grave marking the beginning of a dark time.

Pirates: the open waters between the islands has led to dangerous bands of pirates rising up and not only warring with each other but wrecking potential shipping lines between the cities and islands.

Untamed Wilds Session 14!

The party received a new mission from the cat folk nobility. The son of one of the nobles was apprehended while drunk in the giant lands and the giants are going to ransom him back to the family. The party have been hired to take the payment to the giants and bring the wayward noble home. Our group consisted of the centaur barbarian, half orc barbarian, cat folk rogue/barbarian, blood hunter cat folk, crow ranger, goliath wizard, satyr bard, harpy rogue, cat folk ranger, and lizard folk druid. A few had skill sets that would help with the mission at hand, others had quite the opposite. The meeting place was a little way into the giant territory in an old fortress that had been burned down during a past struggle. The party saw the giants arriving at the same time they were. The stealth team moved into position, the harpy’s hindered the group in sneaking so they could hear but not see what was transpiring inside. The giants, two hill giants and a fire giant with a cat folk over his shoulder, were waiting inside while the rest of the party piled into the ruined structure. Goods were traded, the gems were of good quality and the first hill giant kept calling out “one, one, one” not having the greatest skill when it came to numbers. The fire giant took over and tossed the cat noble to the centaur while assessing the amount given. The noble was excited to be going home.

The parties of characters and giants both made to leave when a loud roaring and bleating filled the air. Two Chimera descended from the sky and attacked. One of the beasts hit a large swath of the party with flames and the other hit the giants. Battle was had! The chimera stood up to the party’s barrage off attacks well, only causing a bit of strife. The bard sent the noble away with his misty step ability as well as granting him movement with his inspired effect, the noble was fine till he fell down that hole. The giants were going to tactically remove themselves from the battle field but the barbarian squad called out that the giants were cowards. Both the harpy and the half orc barbarian antagonized the fire giant, the thieves wanted to steal the gems back and the barbarian wanted to fight it. the wizard attempted to calm the fire giant and was successful, the giant telling him to “discipline the whelp” referring to the half orc after he tossed a javelin at the giant. The party realized they dodged a very dangerous encounter went to gather their charge and found the noble in a hole in the ground. The centaur and harpy investigated, finding the floor of the cavern covered in bones, which started shifting either as if something was living under them or the bones themselves were animate. They quickly exited the hole. The bard sent his unseen servant with some bacon down into the hole and watched as the bones over took it trying to take the bacon. The party decided to leave well enough alone and rest, eventually starting their journey back to town, the wizard chastising the half orc barbarian the whole way.

On the road they saw a strange clucking old woman carving symbols into the ground with a stick. The party held back their bashers while trying to see what she was up to from a distance. They realized the green hag was carving arcane runes in the dirt and before the party got all the way two her she finished her odd incantations and two Annis Hags appeared, one grappling the centaur, the other appearing close to the rear guard. The rear guard scattered and the hag used its nose to find the practically invisible crow ranger, she used her crushing hug to great effect on him. the centaur also took massive damage from a hug. The group made quick work of the hags, the catfolk ranger almost fell in the battle, suffering two critical hits in the same round from an annis hag. The centaur killed the hag grappling her, shocking it to death and causing the energy to burst out from within. The barbarians teamed up on the green hag, the half orc splitting her skull in two pieces and the hag burst into flying bugs. The wizard dropped a fireball on the last one, incinerating the remains instantly. The party was left winded from the hags, found their again hiding charge, and returned him to his family. The party received one hundred gold worth of gems for their troubles. They also gained a new level, reaching 7th level.

Untamed Wilds Session 13!

Having done a great job solving mysteries, the party was tasked with investigating a site where the flesh melding satyr known as Kalish Blackfur supposedly was making monsters. The group of heroes consisted of the crow ranger, centaur barbarian, harpy swashbuckler, catfolk blood hunter, dragonborn war cleric, dragonborn battle master fighter, goliath wizard, Aasimar druid, half orc barbarian, satyr bard, lizard folk druid, catfok barbarian/rogue, human wizard, and human monk. The fourteen of them found themselves at the entry tunnel to the cavern Kalish seemed to be working out of. The chamber was well lit, had torches around the perimeter with four stone slabs in the center of the main room. In a dimly lit area beyond they saw a second deeper chamber with a familiar satyr to a few of them about a hundred feet away.

Wasting no time at all the crow shot three arrows at the satyr, causing him to throw up a magical shield. The barbarian charged ahead and changed direction when she saw the large dragon form in the corner, its scaled dark brown and like the dragons encountered before, the entire beast seemed sewn together. She slashed mightily into its neck. The harpy flew in and got off a shot at the dragon and hid behind one of the slabs, noticing in the next chamber another dragon. The blood hunter fired on Kalish, sending arrows into the darkness. The dragonborn cleric shot his crossbow at the closest dragon being vexed by the centaur, the dragonborn fighter shot his longbow at the same beast, the goliath wizard used firebolt, and the druid aasimar druid used his sling. The dragon’s scales proved tough against their assault. The half orc barbarian entered the fray and slashed at the creature as well but to no avail. The satyr bard used his ability to grant movement to his allies and himself letting the human monk and barbarian catfolk move closer to their enemies. The lizardfolk druid threw fire and moonlight at her enemies. The catfolk barbarian took that opportunity to charge the satyr villain and grapple him. Necromancers are not known for their esteemed skills of wrestling and he became screwed. The barbarian also stabbed him with his sword in his other hand, setting up the necromancer for more pain, and noticed the third stitched dragon. The human wizard cast haste on the human monk, and she stunned the first dragon and continued to whale on him. the necromancer misty stepped away to try to escape but only made it to his exit chute in the ceiling. One of the dragons used his breath weapon, a line of acid on a cluster of the party, ruining a few of their days and causing a bit of a panic. The other dragon lashed out at the cluster heroes, causing a bit of damage. The stunned dragon sat their complacent but lost in thought. The party did great, focusing their firepower on the dragon’s master, the necromancer, as well as the stunned dragon. The grapple barbarian used his catfolk climbing and speed boost to grab the necromancer again and wretch him from the wall. They both fell, further dampening the mood of the necromancer, he tried to dimension door away but the human wizard countered the spell. The goliath wizard used his new scroll of cone of cold to great effect, hitting two of the dragons. The party took out the stunned dragon before it could accomplish much, as it died the body rotted rapidly into a soup. The other dragons flew around biting at people and trying to line up shots for their acid breath. the party worked together to help up any of their group that fell. The necromancer went next, he attempted to take himself out but failed when the human wizard countered his fireball. One of the dragons did blast the necromancer and the heroes with its acid breath in its attempt at vengeance. The necromancer died at the hands of the party, and faded into dust. The dragons did not last much longer.

The party explored the chambers, finding the chute in the ceiling, some tables with empty vials and surgery equipment, as well as a ledge that could allow a flying or climbing creature to bypass a wall. They rested a bit and prepared for their return journey when they heard noises by the entrance. They saw two cloaked trolls with blazing red eyes, they looked angry. The human wizard shot one of them with magic missiles and the monk closed in on it. The other troll moved into range with the rest of the party and cast cone of cold, striking all of them except the speedy monk that just ran away. The combat ensued viciously, a few of the party fell unconscious but were saved by their allies. The troll by the monk fell victim to her stunning fist and ended up pummeled by everything. The other troll was greatly outnumbered and also fell. The party looted them, finding potions on one and broken glass on the other, thanks to the shatter spell of the bard. They survived their dragon encounter, fought as a swarm, and might have defeated a foe they met in session one, if that was really him.
